Liam Norwell selected for the Elite Player Development Squad

Teenage Redruth fast bowler Liam Norwell has earned a place in the national Elite Player Development squad to face Sri Lanka Under 19s later this month.

The 18-year-old former Redruth School pupil will take his place in the Elite 12 on July 18 and 19 at the National Cricket Development Centre in Loughborough.

The 6ft 5in quickie has caught the eye of the national under 19 selectors during appearances for Gloucestershire's second XI this summer.

And his call-up to the Elite squad has not surprised anybody at the club.

Secretary Neil Howarth said: "Liam has made enormous strides this year. He has been with Gloucestershire seconds regularly and his bowling has improved.

"Gloucestershire have increased his speed markedly and his accuracy is better too. He has also improved his batting this season. He's a big lad and he can hit the ball.

"He has all the attributes needed to make a top cricketer, and he's a sensible lad too."

Liam, who has been with Redruth since he was 11, has been ever present for the first team this season as they have stormed to the top of County One with 12 successive victories.

Howarth said: "Liam has been a consistent performer for us this summer, and it is unusual for him not to take two or three wickets in a match.

"Because of his tender age, he is only allowed to bowl seven overs in a stretch but he usually makes an impact.

"Despite travelling up to Gloucestershire quite regularly these days, he has played in every game for us, although he will miss our game against Beacon on July 17 because he'll be travelling to Loughborough."

Liam was part of Redruth School's sixth form cricket academy, and academy coach Peter Bolland told Briton Sport: "He is a very dedicated young player and has great potential.

"He has been travelling up to Gloucestershire every fortnight for the last 18 months and has recently been making his mark in their second team.

"His selection to the Elite Player Development squad could lead to him securing a place on a winter tour.

"At Redruth School and Cricket Club we are all very proud of him."
